6 foods that can lead to weakened bones

6 foods that can lead to weakened bones

One of the biggest food-related cliches is “you are what you eat.” However, that phrase is spot on when it comes to one’s bone health. Eating the right foods can strengthen one’s bones significantly, while the wrong foods can weaken bones by leaving them vulnerable to conditions, such as osteoporosis, and also affect the quality of life at large. If you are at risk of bone-related issues, you must avoid these six foods.

Hot dogs
Its health hazards are well-known across the healthcare community. And yet, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is still a major flavor enhancer in many processed foods one can buy in the market. Foods such as hot dogs, beef jerky, mayonnaise, frozen pizzas, and fried chicken are seasoned with MSG to give them an irresistible taste, fragrance, and flavor. MSG can stimulate one’s nerve cells, leading to seizures and migraines. It can also decrease bone density in regular consumers of the above-mentioned foods.

Coffee
Caffeine is just as bad as MSG when bone health is the topic of discussion. Caffeine-rich beverages, such as coffee, decrease the bone’s ability to absorb adequate amounts of calcium from food for reinforcement purposes. This causes issues such as brittle and porous bones in the long run. To avoid the issue, one should not consume too much coffee (for instance, more than three cups every day). Instead, turn to fruits such as apples or oranges for a burst of energy and to keep one’s bones in good shape for many years.

Beef liver
Another chemical that might be problematic from the perspective of bone health is animal-derived vitamin-A, known popularly as retinol. Beef liver, although delicious and protein-rich food, is unfortunately loaded with retinol. High intake of this food can speed up issues such as osteoclast activity and make one’s bones incredibly brittle. Instead, one can chomp into healthy and just-as delicious chicken dishes to keep the bones healthy and durable.

Sweet potatoes
Carrots and sweet potatoes fall in the same bracket in this regard. Both these foods are rich in vitamin A, a nutrient with several health benefits such as enhancing eye health, clearing skin acne, and strengthening immunity. However, as specified earlier, this vitamin takes away calcium from the bones, leaving them vulnerable to problems. As a result, if one consumes carrots and sweet potatoes on a massive scale (for instance, about four sweet potatoes or 10 to 11 cups of raw carrots), they run the risk of suffering bone issues and injuries in the long term.

Salted nuts
Sodium is another chemical that gradually but surely debilitates a person’s bone health if they consume it regularly. This tangible weakening of the bones becomes more pronounced as people get older. Salted nuts, noodles, salt, and some kinds of hyper-processed pasta are rich in sodium. As per the USDA, one loses 40 milligrams of calcium from their bones every time they consume about 2,300 milligrams of salt and other sodium-rich foods. To minimize sodium consumption, one needs to steer clear of processed foods and use limited amounts of salt in their food.

Rhubarb
Oxalate-rich foods, such as cashew, almonds, spinach, and colocasia, drain the calcium content in a person’s bones. Rhubarb, too contains high reserves of oxalate. So, aficionados of this food will have to cut it out of their daily meals or, at the very least, consume it in moderation if they want to be mindful of their bone health.

Understanding arthritis – A common joint condition

The joints are constantly working while we move our limbs, so, understandably, people may develop certain joint conditions that cause pain and compromise mobility, especially with age. One of the common joint conditions is arthritis, which leads to joint inflammation and mild to severe pain. While there are several types of arthritis, the two most common types are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Stages Rheumatoid arthritis has four stages: Stage 1: At this stage, inflammation occurs inside the joints, and swelling, stiffness, and joint pain are the common symptoms. Stage 2: The inflammation of the joint lining, synovium, aggravates at this stage and results in cartilage damage. The affected joints’ range of motion is also compromised, causing pain and discomfort. Stage 3: At this stage, the severity of the joint condition increases, and it leads to bone damage. This results in more pain, loss of mobility, and weakness of muscles. The bones rubbing against each other can cause bone deformity as well. Stage 4: This is the final stage where the joints stop functioning completely. It leads to more pain, stiffness, and swelling, and the bones may even fuse, which is known as ankylosis. Osteoarthritis also has four stages of progression: Stage 1: Wear and tear may affect the knee joints, and minor spur growths on the affected bone can also be seen, but the condition does not cause too much pain at this stage. Stage 2: The bone spur growths increase and cause pain, and the knee joints become stiffer. Stage 3: This stage is characterized by joint inflammation leading to increased pain and stiffness. Walking can also cause popping sounds in the joints. Stage 4: The space between the bones in the joints becomes very narrow, causing the cartilage to wear down. Also, a chronic inflammatory response caused by the breakdown of cartilage aggravates discomfort and pain. Diagnosis of arthritis These joint conditions can be diagnosed using several tests. A physical examination reveals whether a patient has red, warm, and tender joints, and this test also helps examine the fluid around the joints. A rheumatologist can analyze the level of inflammation in the joints to determine the type of arthritis an individual is affected with. Also, blood tests are undertaken to check for antibodies like anti-CCP, rheumatoid factor, and antinuclear antibody. In addition, X-ray, CT scans, and MRI are also performed to check the condition of the cartilage and bones. Prevention of arthritis A family history of joint conditions like arthritis or aging can increase one’s risk of developing arthritis, but making certain lifestyle changes can also help lower the chances of developing the condition. To start with, one should include more foods with omega-3 fatty acids in their diet as these healthy fats are anti-inflammatory. One should also exercise regularly, keep their weight under check, reduce stress on their joints, and try to avoid injuries. Also, if one notices any symptoms of arthritis, they should consult a doctor immediately as early diagnosis goes a long way in managing the condition effectively through timely treatment.

9 best foods for relieving constipation

Constipation is a common problem that is characterized by symptoms like passing stools less than three times a week, straining, lumpy or hard stools, feeling blocked, and being unable to pass a stool. The intensity of these symptoms may vary from person to person. Healthy eating habits can help relieve constipation by adding bulk, softening the stool, and decreasing gut transit time. So, here are a few foods that can relieve constipation: Prunes Prunes are a popular natural remedy for constipation. They are rich in fiber, and the insoluble fiber content (cellulose) increases the water content in the stool, which adds bulk. The soluble fiber produces short-chain fatty acids in the colon, increasing bulk. Prunes also contain sorbitol and phenolic compounds, which have a laxative effect on the body. The combination of these three factors makes prunes an excellent home remedy for those struggling with constipation. Apples Apples are also a rich source of fiber. The insoluble fiber content adds bulk, while the soluble fiber (pectin) forms short-chain fatty acids and pulls water into the colon. This softens the stool and decreases gut transit time, which can help relieve constipation. For best results, one should have apples with their skin intact. Chickpeas Chickpeas are a rich source of protein, iron, and fiber. They can easily be added to meals in the form of hummus or a salad. They are particularly high in a soluble fiber called raffinose that breaks down slowly in the colon and aids bowel movement. Oats Oats are a good source of the soluble fiber beta-glucan, which helps with digestion and cholesterol. Oat bran, the outer casing of the oat grain, contains the highest amount of fiber and has been reported to increase the frequency and consistency of bowel movements, particularly among older adults. Spinach Leafy greens such as spinach and Brussels sprouts offer a lot of nutritional value, including fiber, folate, and vitamins C and K. These can help add bulk to the stool, providing relief from constipation. Artichoke Artichoke hearts have a prebiotic effect on the body, promoting good gut health. Artichoke feeds the good bacteria in the gut, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. These good bacteria have a positive effect on digestion and stool frequency and consistency. Chia seeds Chia seeds are packed with fiber. When they come in contact with water, they form a gel, which helps soften the stool. Chia seeds also help add bulk to the stool to allow constipation relief. They are versatile and can easily be added to meals as a topping or mixed in salad dressings and desserts. Sweet potato Sweet potatoes are a good source of the insoluble fibers cellulose and lignin and the soluble fiber pectin. The fiber helps by adding bulk to the stools, relieving constipation. Flaxseeds Flaxseeds are popular as a traditional remedy for constipation. They contain soluble and insoluble fiber, making them adept at helping with bowel movements. Apart from the fiber content, they also contain oil, which acts as a lubricant for quicker relief from constipation. However, pregnant and breastfeeding women must speak to their doctors before adding flaxseeds to their meals.

Allergies – Stages and prevention

Allergies – Stages and prevention

The immune system of our bodies is constantly fighting against viruses and bacteria to keep us healthy. However, in certain cases, the immune system may also end up fighting some substances that are not always harmful. When this happens, you experience an allergic reaction. The allergens are the substances that cause the reactions. With a little carefulness, you can prevent the allergies effectively. The allergic development Even though an allergic reaction can vary from person to person, it generally progresses in the same five stages: Stage 1 The allergen enters your body through food, air, or touch, and contact the cells in your body. Stage 2 Your immune system creates immunoglobulin E, which is a type of antibody. Stage 3 This antibody enters your gastrointestinal tract or respiratory tract but does not do anything. Stage 4 The next time when you are exposed to the same allergen, the immunoglobulin E treats it as a harmful substance and reacts with it. Stage 5 24 hours after the reaction, the immune system cells move towards the areas that were affected to release certain chemicals to treat it. How to diagnose allergies Your allergies can be diagnosed by a doctor. Before visiting him or her, you must recognize the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
