8 common household factors that can cause lung damage

8 common household factors that can cause lung damage

The lungs are the most integral part of the respiratory system in the human body. They are responsible for facilitating gas exchange from the environment into the bloodstream. Maintaining lung function is pertinent for healthy living. Several factors, including indoor pollution, may impact lung health. This can give rise to symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, breathlessness, fatigue, excessive mucus production, and more. Eight common household factors that contribute to lung damage include:

Mold
Mold is a fungus that thrives in damp environments and reproduces by spreading spores through the air. Those with allergies to mold spores, lung conditions such as COPD, or a weak immune system, may develop lung infections as a result of this. To avoid these, fix leaks around the home and steer clear of compost piles.

Carpet
Many carpets are made of durable materials that can trap harmful pollutants like cockroach droppings, mold, dust mites, and toxic gases in their fibers. These pollutants can enter the air when someone walks on the carpet or when it is vacuumed and harm lung health. If possible, consider switching to hard flooring that is easy to clean. Alternatively, use throw rugs that can be cleaned outside the home, vacuum the carpet three times a week, and have it steam cleaned at least once a year.

Humidifier
Humidifiers are meant to ease breathing in dry conditions. However, due to the humidity build-up within the device, they can become a breeding ground for fungus. When the machine is turned on, this spreads around the house and can cause allergies or lung inflammation. To avoid this, ensure that the device is cleaned and serviced regularly.

Flour
Breathing in too much flour can lead to complications such as coughing, wheezing, and struggling for breath. This is commonly seen among bakers and is known as baker’s asthma. Over time, this can cause lung damage.

Candles
Most candles are made from petroleum-based paraffin wax. When burned, this releases chemicals into the air that can lead to lung damage. Switch to safer alternatives such as soy or beeswax candles, and ensure that these candles are only burned in areas with proper ventilation.

Gas appliances
As gas, wood, oil, coal, and kerosene burn, they release nitrous oxide. This can cause coughing and wheezing and trigger asthma attacks, harming lung health. Gas is commonly used in home appliances such as cooktops, ovens, and space heaters. Be sure to install, clean, and maintain these appliances properly. If possible, switch to electric cooktops.

Cockroaches
It’s never pleasant to see cockroaches in the house. Their droppings and parts of their bodies turn into dust, which can settle on the floors, furniture, and carpets. Breathing this in can lead to breathlessness and allergies. Among young kids, it can also cause asthma. To keep cockroaches at bay, keep the home as clean and dry as possible.

Hot tubs
A bacterial build-up in indoor hot tubs can also lead to lung inflammation, fever, cough, and breathlessness. To avoid this, ensure that the tubs, showers, and pools in the house are regularly cleaned and maintained well.

Common cleaning products used for daily chores and disinfectants also contain harmful compounds that can worsen lung damage and trigger the symptoms of COPD. These include aerosols, air fresheners, chlorine bleach, detergents, washing liquids, dry cleaning chemicals, furniture polish, and oven cleaners, among regular-use products. These are all laced with chemicals that irritate the lung air sacs and affect breathing.

Apart from household factors, several other lifestyle factors can also impact lung health. Some of these include exposure to radon and fireworks, working with pesticides, and engaging in activities such as farming.

Understanding arthritis – A common joint condition

The joints are constantly working while we move our limbs, so, understandably, people may develop certain joint conditions that cause pain and compromise mobility, especially with age. One of the common joint conditions is arthritis, which leads to joint inflammation and mild to severe pain. While there are several types of arthritis, the two most common types are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Stages Rheumatoid arthritis has four stages: Stage 1: At this stage, inflammation occurs inside the joints, and swelling, stiffness, and joint pain are the common symptoms. Stage 2: The inflammation of the joint lining, synovium, aggravates at this stage and results in cartilage damage. The affected joints’ range of motion is also compromised, causing pain and discomfort. Stage 3: At this stage, the severity of the joint condition increases, and it leads to bone damage. This results in more pain, loss of mobility, and weakness of muscles. The bones rubbing against each other can cause bone deformity as well. Stage 4: This is the final stage where the joints stop functioning completely. It leads to more pain, stiffness, and swelling, and the bones may even fuse, which is known as ankylosis. Osteoarthritis also has four stages of progression: Stage 1: Wear and tear may affect the knee joints, and minor spur growths on the affected bone can also be seen, but the condition does not cause too much pain at this stage. Stage 2: The bone spur growths increase and cause pain, and the knee joints become stiffer. Stage 3: This stage is characterized by joint inflammation leading to increased pain and stiffness. Walking can also cause popping sounds in the joints. Stage 4: The space between the bones in the joints becomes very narrow, causing the cartilage to wear down. Also, a chronic inflammatory response caused by the breakdown of cartilage aggravates discomfort and pain. Diagnosis of arthritis These joint conditions can be diagnosed using several tests. A physical examination reveals whether a patient has red, warm, and tender joints, and this test also helps examine the fluid around the joints. A rheumatologist can analyze the level of inflammation in the joints to determine the type of arthritis an individual is affected with. Also, blood tests are undertaken to check for antibodies like anti-CCP, rheumatoid factor, and antinuclear antibody. In addition, X-ray, CT scans, and MRI are also performed to check the condition of the cartilage and bones. Prevention of arthritis A family history of joint conditions like arthritis or aging can increase one’s risk of developing arthritis, but making certain lifestyle changes can also help lower the chances of developing the condition. To start with, one should include more foods with omega-3 fatty acids in their diet as these healthy fats are anti-inflammatory. One should also exercise regularly, keep their weight under check, reduce stress on their joints, and try to avoid injuries. Also, if one notices any symptoms of arthritis, they should consult a doctor immediately as early diagnosis goes a long way in managing the condition effectively through timely treatment.

7 common signs of Huntington’s disease to know of

Huntington's Disease (HD) is a rare neurological disease affecting the part of one’s brain that controls bodily movements. Due to the disease, the affected nerve cells weaken, break down, and die over time. The physical and neuropsychiatric symptoms and their progression may vary from one person to another. HD is diagnosed by closely studying one’s medical history, neurological exams, diagnostic imaging, and genetic tests. Let’s learn more about its symptoms and who it affects primarily. Who does Huntington's Disease affect? Since HD is an inherited or genetic disorder, it is more likely to affect those whose family members or close relatives have this condition. It is primarily triggered by a mutation in the gene responsible for producing the huntingtin protein. Usually, the HD symptoms start to show in middle-aged individuals after their 30s or 40s, but if one shows signs before 20, it’s termed juvenile Huntington's disease. Common symptoms of Huntington's disease Early signs of HD, especially in the case of juveniles, might be more tricky to diagnose, enabling the condition to progress rapidly. If left undetected and untreated, the symptoms may worsen. Involuntary movements The most common symptom is involuntary, jerky movements, and may manifest in ways like: Muscle jerking Muscle rigidity Sudden muscular contractions or tremors Frequent falls, stumbling, and difficulty in walking Seizures, more commonly seen in juvenile cases Uncoordinated eye movements, which can be slow or seem unusual These symptoms may worsen when the person feels a surge of intense emotion, including stress or anxiety, and significantly affect one’s ability to carry out daily tasks or hold conversations. Abnormal body postures An individual affected by HD may showcase abnormal body postures, gait, or balance due to loss of voluntary control over one’s body. They also tend to display dance-like movements referred to as chorea. The movements may be commonly seen in one’s feet, face, torso, or fingers. Speech and swallowing difficulties Huntington's Disease can affect the muscles responsible for speech and swallowing. Individuals may experience slurred speech, difficulty articulating words, and challenges in swallowing. These issues can contribute to malnutrition and aspiration, where food or liquids enter the airway instead of the digestive tract. Cognitive impairment HD primarily affects the brain and can lead to several impaired cognitive functions, and may manifest as: Mood swings Memory lapses and difficulty in concentrating on tasks at hand Difficulty in learning new skills or answering questions Sudden anger outbursts Lack of discerning judgment or acting without thinking Inability to understand one’s behavior Inability to process thoughts Difficulty organizing, planning, or making decisions A rapid drop in productivity Behavioral changes Psychological disorders HD patients are more prone to develop depression. They may become irritable, withdraw from socializing, or become sad or numb. They may also lose sleep and experience exhaustion and low self-esteem. Apart from depression, they risk developing obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD, bipolar disorder, or mania. Stomach issues Inflammation in one’s esophagus and stomach, choking, constipation, and nausea are other common signs of HD. Overactive immunity Research has found that Huntington's mutation may lead to an overactive immune response, wherein the immune cells begin to attack one’s body. There is no definite cure for Huntington's Disease, but various treatments and therapies are available to manage symptoms and improve one’s quality of life. The condition requires a multidisciplinary approach involving neurologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists.

Allergies – Stages and prevention

Allergies – Stages and prevention

The immune system of our bodies is constantly fighting against viruses and bacteria to keep us healthy. However, in certain cases, the immune system may also end up fighting some substances that are not always harmful. When this happens, you experience an allergic reaction. The allergens are the substances that cause the reactions. With a little carefulness, you can prevent the allergies effectively. The allergic development Even though an allergic reaction can vary from person to person, it generally progresses in the same five stages: Stage 1 The allergen enters your body through food, air, or touch, and contact the cells in your body. Stage 2 Your immune system creates immunoglobulin E, which is a type of antibody. Stage 3 This antibody enters your gastrointestinal tract or respiratory tract but does not do anything. Stage 4 The next time when you are exposed to the same allergen, the immunoglobulin E treats it as a harmful substance and reacts with it. Stage 5 24 hours after the reaction, the immune system cells move towards the areas that were affected to release certain chemicals to treat it. How to diagnose allergies Your allergies can be diagnosed by a doctor. Before visiting him or her, you must recognize the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
